One Person Built It. That Is The Point.

Small Business

Article excerpt

Small shops keep apologizing for being small. Your customers are not comparing you to a corporation. They are choosing you because you are not one.

I read a lot of small business websites. There is a pattern and it is a shame.

A one person operation writes: Our team of experienced professionals is dedicated to delivering solutions that exceed expectations. Then the contact page has a form and no phone number.

Ryan wrote that. Ryan is the team. Everybody reading it knows.

Why that instinct exists

It feels safer. Sounding bigger feels like sounding more legitimate, and there is a real fear that admitting you are small costs you the job.

But it does not read as bigger. It reads as evasive. Vague corporate language on a small business site makes people wonder what you are covering for.

What people are actually choosing

Somebody picking a small local shop over a national chain already knows the chain exists. They chose to look at you specifically.

They want the guy who answers his own phone. They want to talk to whoever is going to do the work. They want to know that if something goes wrong there is a person, not a ticket number and a hold queue.

That is your entire advantage. And then the website hides it behind language borrowed from a company with four hundred employees.

What to write instead

Your name. What you actually do, in the words a customer would use, not the words the industry uses.

Who does the work. If it is you, say it is you. If you have two guys, name them. If you sub out electrical, say that too, because it will come up anyway and it is better coming from you.

And how long you have been at it, in this town, doing this thing. That is credibility you already earned and it costs nothing to state.

Put the phone number up

Top of every page, tappable. I know a form is easier to manage. I know the phone ringing at 4:40 on a Friday is annoying.

But most people in the middle of deciding will call, not fill out a form and wait. A form is where a lead goes to think about it overnight and then not bother.

The version that works

I am Ryan. I build websites for small businesses in Tucson. I do the design and the code myself, you talk to me, and you own everything when we are done.

That is four sentences and it does more work than a page of solutions language. Try yours that way and see how it sounds out loud.

That is the whole article. If it was useful, there are 27 more, and one email when a new one goes up.
